Coffee House Series

Thank you for providing me with a wonderful new series of books, characters and genre! What a summer getting to know everyone at the Blend! Hope the writing is going well!
September 8, 2011

I love espresso.

Just discovered your mystery series. I work in a Library, so many books come across the desk, and I am always look for a good mystery. Mysteries are my favorite genre. Love Clare, Mike Quinn, actually I love them all. My Italian grandmother gave me my first espresso when I was six. Have been drinking coffee ever since. I even have her stove top pot. But, I do have a small counter top unit too. Even made it for my adult sons, who also love it.

Murder By Mocha

It was soooo good, and so sexy, that when I finally finished it, I felt like I should have a cigarette, and I don't even smoke!!

Murder by Mocha

I just got a copy from the library and can't wait to read it. I love that your last few books come out in August. That gives me something to look forward to as I start a new school year. I am going to look at the recipe section first! BTW, this teacher uses her "book money" on classroom titles and supports the library for her own reading. Pattie in Florida

Murder by Mocha

It was super!. I also was stuck in because of Irene here in VA so I read your book. It was so good. Have read all the books in this series and 3 of the Ghost books. Enjoy them all. Thanks for giving us such good books to enjoy!

Murder by Mocha

Stuck in the house because of Irene, but thankfully, the first day passed smoothly. A good cup of coffee and a great book and before I knew it, it was time for dinner. Thank you for Murder by Mocha. I loved it!

Clare's Mini Red and Green Holiday Biscotti

Hello Cleo, I just started reading your wonderful coffee mysteries! Just finished reading " Holiday Grind" I am hoping that you will post the recipe for Clare's Mini Red and Green Holiday Biscotti! It sounds just wonderful!! Thank you, R. Wheeler

Note to Cleo: First Time Reader

Hi Cleo,

I just finished reading my first Cleo Coyle book "Holiday Grind" and I loved it.

I took up the challenge to see if I could figure out who did it (before the end of the book) but alas, I was stumped until the end.

My husband and I love our coffee as well but can't seem to get the perfect espresso out of my espresso machine. We keep using the manual stove top one. Any tips would be appreciated.

Cleo's reply:

Thank you for the kind words on Holiday Grind. It's a very cozy book to read in the fall with the weather cooling off and the anticipation of the holidays nearing.

The "Holidays in New York" theme made it a particularly enjoyable entry to write. Even though my husband (Marc) and I have lived in NYC for over two decades, we always find ourselves enchanted by some aspect of the city at that time of year. As for your excellent coffee question...

The truth is... most home espresso machines will not be able to produce the kind of pressure that a professional machine can. (You would have to invest $1000 or more in a machine that could even come close.) That's why I make home "espresso-style" drinks in my stovetop pot (no crema but delicious!) and leave the pulled espressos to the baristas at my local coffeehouse.

Still...I want to help out you and your husband, and I do recall that same question being posed to a US Barista champion a few years ago. If you watch this short YouTube film below, you should get some good pointers. In the first few minutes, Kyle introduces himself  and talks about the national barista competition. Then he'll get on with showing you how to make a better espresso in your home machine. I hope this will prove helpful to you...

Warmest java wishes
and keep in touch,

~ Cleo

So I can only have dinner with one person??

It would have to be Madame. I would love to share a meal with Madame in some out of the way, tucked into a dark spot, hideaway that she knows about along with other prominent New Yorkers that merely nod their heads to each other when they see one another.

We would discuss how she got into the coffee business, her love life, who & what she thinks is important in today's society and why we both agree that the world would stop spinning if coffee were not around.

I think she has a wealth of knowledge to share with the world and she only wishes to dole it out a little at a time so we might have to meet more than once! Matt may think he knows everything about coffee but I think Madame has him beat! After all, who trained him?!

Cleo's reply:

Lovely! Thank you so much for sharing. You are now entered in my contest. Good luck and stay tuned!

Dinner with a Character

Email sent with the elaboration on why I would like dinner with a character...

Cleo's reply:

Thank you for entering, can't wait to read it, and good luck!

August 18, 2011

Cleo's reply: Aw, thanks A2. That is incredibly sweet. Much appreciated...

August 17, 2011

Madame of course!

I would love to spend an afternoon with Madame. She is so intriguing! She's such a character and fiesty too.

I'm just afraid that the time would fly by much too quickly for me. I would be on the edge of my seat trying to keep up with her and her wit. ;o)

Tonya from Louisiana

Cleo's reply:

If Madame were here, she would probably say...

"Brevity is the soul of wit, my dear, so I shall simply say, 'Merci beaucoup, Tonya, for your very good taste!'"

Here in Iowa

Cleo, Here in Iowa we have the State Fair. It's one of the biggest in the country. You can find any type of food on a stick....even fried BUTTER.

In the spring here in Cedar Rapids, we have a rubber
duck race...

all those little yellow ducks that kids play with in bath tubs are put in the river and floated down to the "finish line" and the first one wins.

17,000 rubber duckies are ready to race in Iowa!
To jump to a video of this annual Duck Race,
visit the facebook page of a duck race fan,

ALL the proceeds from buying a duck ($5) goes to children programs here. We also have a cardboard regada sometime during the year...or at least we did before the flood of 2008. Those kids in the video were awsome. Thanks for sharing. :)

Cleo's reply: Thank you for sharing, too! I found a photo of your amazing Duck Race, but you had me at fried butter. :)

Finished...your new Coffeehouse Mystery

I finally finished Murder By Mocha...life kept getting in the way so it took longer than I wanted. I have to tell you that my heart was in my throat, my nails are chewed down to nothing and everytime that door opened, my breathing would stop!! Great book...I had the killer figured out all wrong though so that makes it even better ;) Thanks for another great book.

Sue (in Iowa)

Cleo's reply:

Hellooo IOWA!!!

Sue, thank YOU so much for dropping back to let me know what you thought of my new release. I'm so very glad to hear you weren't disappointed. (That's something that keeps me going daily as I write. I strive *not* to disappoint very kind readers like you.)

Marc and I are already working on the 11th entry in the Coffeehouse Mystery series. We researched one of the settings over this past weekend--the annual Dragon Boat Festival here in Queens, New York.

This event is held every year in Flushing Meadow Park (the sight of a former World's Fair), and 180 teams competed this year. I'll have some photos of the day, but for now I have some fun, raw video footage to share...

In my video clip below
(just uploaded to YouTube!) Shaolin Temple students demonstrate forms of Kung Fu on the main stage of this year's annual Dragon Boat Festival in Queens, New York...

I think Clare and Madame
could handle these guys.
What do you think?!

Brooklyn Blackout Cake

I have searched the website, but I have not been able to find the PDF recipe for "Clare's Brooklyn Blackout Cake (For Mike)". Can you please tell me which link to open? Thanks. I have every one of your Coffeehouse Mysteries and I preorder them from Amazon to be sure I get them as soon as they come out. I just hate when I've finished one because I will have to wait too long for the next one.

Cleo's reply:

Thank you so much for supporting my mystery series; it means a lot to me! Clare's Brooklyn Blackout Cake will be the subject of a very special blog post later this month, and I will indeed include a PDF that you can download. That cake has been a favorite of New Yorkers for years, and I think you'll enjoy it. (The one you see pictured here is actually the Moist Mocha Cake with Shiny Chocolate Glaze.)

(Truth is...) We had some record heat here in New York City, and it became impossible to spend the day baking, but I plan to get that Blackout Cake on the Web site soon...

In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the other free recipes on this site and the new recipe for Aphrodisiac Brownies, which I just posted here:

When you jump over there, you'll also see that I've just launched a fun reader contest, too, just scroll down the post to learn how to enter.

If you haven't signed up for my newsletter, you should! I'll be re-launching it shortly. I plan to inform subscribers of new recipe posts (like the Blackout Cake) as well as contests and ongoing news about both of my series.

Thanks again for dropping by; and come on back for cake! (Again, you'll see it posted here before the end of August.)

Landon Pigg song

I love it! Is it available to purchase on YouTube? Sounds so much like a song about Mike Quinn!

Cleo's reply:

I am so glad you like the song. (I posted the YouTube link of it below.) You're right. That is exactly what I say about it on this site's home page:

"I've come to think of this as Mike Quinn's theme..."

P.S. To answer your question, you can purchase this song anywhere you would normally purchase music. Landon Pigg is the artist and the name of the song is "Falling in Love at a Coffee Shop." Enjoy! ~ Cleo

Cleo's reply -- A2, The Large Print edition should be out in a few months!

I have another idea for you, too. You might get a kick out of listening to MURDER BY MOCHA! It will be released as an audio book by AudioGo (BBC Audiobooks America) this month. I'm very excited about this. I spoke with the actress reading the book, and she's terrific! She trained for the stage at university. She's excellent, and I can't wait for you all to hear her!

I'll post more about the audio editions soon. In the meantime, you can now listen to ON WHAT GROUNDS in audio! The book is available via the iTunes store. AND you can easily get it as a digital download at Amazon through Audible.com. Here's how...

Click here to jump to the product page for ON WHAT GROUNDS and look at the different FORMATS that Amazon shows are available. Click on the AUDIBLE format, and you'll see one way to download it if you're interested!

I'll be sure to post the link for MURDER BY MOCHA's audio edition as well as the other books in my Coffeehouse series when they become available.

Warmest java wishes,
~ Cleo

Possible crossover?

In, "Murder by Mocha" there is a reference to Quindicott...is it possible that Mrs. McClure and Ms. Cosi will meet???

That would be so cool!

I'm only a little way into the second Mystery Bookshop series, so maybe it's already happened and I haven't gotten there yet...

You are a very observant reader! Bravo! Cleo's reply to come shortly...
