What a wonderful Santa

santa was really good to me this year ...Igot the kindle I asked for and a gift card to go with it so I've spent time downloading your books and reading. I'm almost finished with Latte Trouble and as soon as I'm finished with it,I'll start Murder Most Frothy and I won't even have to leave my snow covered house(7inches on Christmas eve)to buy it
December 26, 2010

Twas the night after Christmas...

Twas the night after Christmas,
and all through the house,
every room had been trashed,
both inside and out.

Wrapping paper had been flung
to the ceiling in shreds
while clumps of ribbon dangled
from sleeping cats' heads.

With Pawpaw in his underwear
and I in my sweats,
we'd just gone to sleep
with cleaning, next day,
as my biggest fret,

when down in the living room
there arose such a clatter,
I jumped from my bed
to see what was the matter.

By the light of the TV
on the debris on the floor,
I could see someone coming
through the front door.

By her organization
and neat smile so merry, I knew in a minute
she was the House Cleaning Fairy!

With a flourish of bucket,
she turned with a jerk,
picked up her brushes
and went straight to work.

Gone was the paper,
the ribbon, and loose candy!
Cleaned were the floors, and dishes,
everything just dandy.

As I stood in a daze
and watched her work fast,
she cleaned counters and shelves,
giving my face a quick wash
as she whirled past.

Giving the TV a quick polish
and a pat to the dog, she said,
"It's just a dream, dear,

someone spiked the eggnog!"

Note to Cleo

I am happy to report that my chocolate covered cherry cordials turned out fabulous! I was extremely excited and am now trying other recipes out of the books! What would you recommend? Do you have any particular favorites I should try? Hope your family has a great holiday! :)

~ Kali in Washington

Cleo's reply:

Kali, I am so happy to hear that Mike's Chocolate Cherry Codials turned out for you! If you liked them, then you might really enjoy the Chocolate Cherry Cordial Fudge, which is absolutely delicious and much easier to make than the cordials.

(For anyone else reading this: All of the recipes I'm suggesting to Kali in this note can be found in HOLIDAY GRIND: A Coffeehouse Mystery. To learn more about all of the books in my culinary mystery series, click here.)

If you like gingersnaps, then Tucker's Gingersnaps with Whiskey-Lemon Glaze are also a nice treat at this time of year.

Italians love to use orange and lemon flavorings in their desserts. I make the Candied Oragne Peels every year. I enjoy eating them straight up and I also like to chop them up for a lovely flavor additon to quick breads, muffins, and cookies. Also...

When you make the candied orange peels (which is basically a particular process of boiling them in sugar water), you'll get an amazing byproduct--fresh, orange bar syrup. I use this bar syrup to sweeten iced tea. Sometimes I'll just add a bit of club soda into a glass with ice and the orange syrup. It's soooo good!

Thanks for the update and question, Kali. Come back again anytime!

Cook (and eat) with joy!

CUTE! I love the Cat!

I also see the latest cover art -- More Spilled Coffee! Clare will take care of it I know, can't wait to see how...Congratulations on the great article on ANNARBOR.com! We also have tried Mike Quinn’s Chocolate Cherry Cordials — our sugar paste didn’t turn out quite right, we suspect the cherries were still too wet. It tasted great though, and we will try it again (practice makes perfect, right?). Although waiting for the finished cherries is difficult, we’ve learned patients waiting for more Coffee House Mysteries! Well worth the wait.

Note to Cleo

I just love the Coffee House Mysteries and think you are a fabulous writer. My favorite thus far has been the Holiday Grind as I just love the holidays.

I have just attempted to make Mike Quinn's Chocolate Cherry Cordials and am currently waiting the week or two to see if they turned out. I was curious though if the sugar paste is supposed to be a thick coating on the cherry (like you're holding a white cherry) or if it's just supposed to be like you dipped it? I struggled with that part, but I think it worked out well enough that it will turn out! Can't wait for your next book! :)

Happy Holidays from
Kali in Washington.

Cleo's Reply:

Hi Kali, thank you for dropping by my *virtual* coffeehouse. Quick answer to your chocolate cherry cordial question: as I said in the recipe, the important thing is to make sure the cherry is completely enveloped in the sugar paste. In other words, the sugar paste should be thick enough that you don't see any red cherry peeking through and it should seal to the very top of the cherry, around the stem. It's a tricky candy but delicious -- even when it doesn't come out perfectly!

I'd like to think that when Mike made his batch of chocolate cherry cordials for Clare, he made them with love, which means they couldn't have been more perfect.

Warmest wishes to you for a joyous holiday season. Stop back anytime! (I'd love to know how your cherries came out!)

YEA!!! Crystal's Finished reading Holiday Grind!

YEA!!!  Crystal's Finished reading Holiday Grind!

This is the Slowest she’s ever read a book; not because she was torturing me, but because she kept having to try recipes.

She enjoyed reading the recipe section as much as a story line. Now I get to read it and find out why she kept giggling (She is NOT prone to giggling). Also she even laughed out loud -- and not wanting to spoil anything for Bob or me, she would only reply "Candy Canes".

Now I'm even more curious what happens. I may have to let her have the books some (the recipes "call" her). She's hoping for the recipe of something Madame was drinking. I know you stay extremely busy, but I’d love to see an Avatar version of Clare’s Cat.

Audiobooks?

Hello Cleo, If I may ask is there any chance your great books will be made into audiobooks? You could have codes to your website that one can download the recipes associated with the book. I thank you for taking the time to review my inquiry, and I wish you and yours a Happy Holiday season.

Cleo's reply: Yes! Big announcement coming soon on audio books. Stay tuned. Thank you for asking -- and especially for reading. :)

Happy Holidays to you and yours, as well.
