YUM!

Just finished reading"Holiday Grind". Loved having the recipes and all the ifo on coffee and drinks. Wish I'd known about Joe's when I was in NYC.
January 6, 2011

Reading "Holiday Grind" and LOVING it!

I just have to say, this book is great. Well written and entertaining! I'm thoroughly enthralled and can't wait to read more coffee house mysteries. GREAT idea for a book series.
January 6, 2011

love the autumn potato recipe!

It is my new favorite dish! Thank you for making vegetables edible ...
January 4, 2011

I just got the whole series!

I had checked out Holiday Grind from my local library about a year ago and fell in love with it! I told my sister-in-law how much I loved the book (and recipes), and for Christmas this year she managed to track down all the books in the series on Amazon.com for me!!! I have already read Espresso Shot and Roast Mortem, and I can't wait to continue on and read the rest of the books! I am an avid book reader, and coffee lover, so your books are a complete delight for me. Thank you for all that you do in keeping your readers entertained (wonderful stories and delicious recipes)! -Jennifer from Arizona :)
January 2, 2011

Happy New Year Cleo.

Love your books and recipes. Just finished Roast Mortem. Would like the recipe for Baby Dutch Pancake and Pistachio muffins.

~ Johanna in Ca,
80 years young.

Cleo's reply:

Dear Johanna,

Thank you, young lady, for letting me be a part of your reading life. I am delighted to learn that you enjoyed Roast Mortem and happy to share the bonus recipes you requested.

The classic version of the Dutch Baby Pancake
uses a cast iron skillet. Most people I know
don't own such a thing so I decided to adapt
the recipe to a cake pan, which almost every cook
has in his or her kitchen. Here you go!

I don't use pistachio extract in this recipe. I use real pistachios to give my muffins a beautiful, natural, nutty flavor. To give the muffins moistness and nutrition, I use an Italian cook's secret (ricotta cheese).

Happy New Year, Johanna

What a wonderful Santa

santa was really good to me this year ...Igot the kindle I asked for and a gift card to go with it so I've spent time downloading your books and reading. I'm almost finished with Latte Trouble and as soon as I'm finished with it,I'll start Murder Most Frothy and I won't even have to leave my snow covered house(7inches on Christmas eve)to buy it
December 26, 2010

Twas the night after Christmas...

Twas the night after Christmas,
and all through the house,
every room had been trashed,
both inside and out.

Wrapping paper had been flung
to the ceiling in shreds
while clumps of ribbon dangled
from sleeping cats' heads.

With Pawpaw in his underwear
and I in my sweats,
we'd just gone to sleep
with cleaning, next day,
as my biggest fret,

when down in the living room
there arose such a clatter,
I jumped from my bed
to see what was the matter.

By the light of the TV
on the debris on the floor,
I could see someone coming
through the front door.

By her organization
and neat smile so merry, I knew in a minute
she was the House Cleaning Fairy!

With a flourish of bucket,
she turned with a jerk,
picked up her brushes
and went straight to work.

Gone was the paper,
the ribbon, and loose candy!
Cleaned were the floors, and dishes,
everything just dandy.

As I stood in a daze
and watched her work fast,
she cleaned counters and shelves,
giving my face a quick wash
as she whirled past.

Giving the TV a quick polish
and a pat to the dog, she said,
"It's just a dream, dear,

someone spiked the eggnog!"

Chocolate Cherry Cordial Fudge, YES!

We tried this recipe easy to make and it turned out well, very delicious. We plan on trying the Candied Orange Peels soon. We particularly enjoyed the Biscotti -- can't make enough.

Note to Cleo

I am happy to report that my chocolate covered cherry cordials turned out fabulous! I was extremely excited and am now trying other recipes out of the books! What would you recommend? Do you have any particular favorites I should try? Hope your family has a great holiday! :)

~ Kali in Washington

Cleo's reply:

Kali, I am so happy to hear that Mike's Chocolate Cherry Codials turned out for you! If you liked them, then you might really enjoy the Chocolate Cherry Cordial Fudge, which is absolutely delicious and much easier to make than the cordials.

(For anyone else reading this: All of the recipes I'm suggesting to Kali in this note can be found in HOLIDAY GRIND: A Coffeehouse Mystery. To learn more about all of the books in my culinary mystery series, click here.)

If you like gingersnaps, then Tucker's Gingersnaps with Whiskey-Lemon Glaze are also a nice treat at this time of year.

Italians love to use orange and lemon flavorings in their desserts. I make the Candied Oragne Peels every year. I enjoy eating them straight up and I also like to chop them up for a lovely flavor additon to quick breads, muffins, and cookies. Also...

When you make the candied orange peels (which is basically a particular process of boiling them in sugar water), you'll get an amazing byproduct--fresh, orange bar syrup. I use this bar syrup to sweeten iced tea. Sometimes I'll just add a bit of club soda into a glass with ice and the orange syrup. It's soooo good!

Thanks for the update and question, Kali. Come back again anytime!

Cook (and eat) with joy!
~ Cleo

CUTE! I love the Cat!

I also see the latest cover art -- More Spilled Coffee! Clare will take care of it I know, can't wait to see how...Congratulations on the great article on ANNARBOR.com! We also have tried Mike Quinn’s Chocolate Cherry Cordials — our sugar paste didn’t turn out quite right, we suspect the cherries were still too wet. It tasted great though, and we will try it again (practice makes perfect, right?). Although waiting for the finished cherries is difficult, we’ve learned patients waiting for more Coffee House Mysteries! Well worth the wait.
