You absolutely have a new fan

Dear Cleo,

#11 "A Brew to a Kill" is the 6th of this series I've read...I thoroughly enjoyed (& will continue to enjoy) each & every one...I look forward to reading your whole series...both of them. You absolutely have a new fan/ follower. God Bless...

Reply for Cleo -

Thank you Marty (Martha)! We appreciate that you've been enjoying the entertaining mysteries that Cleo writes.

Cleo aims to write good fiction, and we're glad you were entertained by the story and characters, and we hope you continue to enjoy them for years to come. FYI - We should note for you that "A Brew to a Kill" was written over a decade ago. May we suggest reading a more recent book - BREWED AWAKENING and HONEY ROASTED, check them out! And if you can't afford to purchase Cleo's books...

LIBRARIES: If ever you don't see a book you wish to read in your local library's catalog, don't be shy, ask the librarian to stock it for you, or ask them to help with an interlibrary loan. If your librarians are on the ball (and let's hope they are!) they really should help you find a way to read a book you wish to read, especially a book that's in print, listed in the World Cat catalog, and published by the largest English language publisher on the planet (as Cleo's books are). So thanks again for your good wishes, we wish you the same, and happy reading!

Espresso facts

Hi there, I love your books and please dont ever change your reader! Love her character voices. I also love coffee. Are your coffee and espresso facts true or made up? I feel like I have really learned from them, just making sure they are facts?

Love, Cecilia
PS Thinking about buying a coffee bean roaster!

Reply from Cleo:

Hi, Cecilia,

Thank you for your question, and thank you especially for the nice words about my books. I agree with you about our audiobook narrator, Becky Gibel. She's a wonderful voice actress as well as an accomplished stage and screen actress. She was even part of the Oscar-winning Best Picture cast for the beautiful movie CODA. We're so proud of her!

Finally, yes, the facts about coffee and espresso are well researched. They are true facts.

May you read (and drink!) with joy!

Hello! Just love your books they are addicting! Was wondering when your next book signing is or do you have those?

Cleo's reply -- Oh, thank you so much for the nice words about my books. That means a lot to me. I would love to do a signing and meet you and any other readers up for a caffeinated evening. Maybe someday soon. Right now, I'm focused on meeting my next few deadlines and am not able to plan a signing. But I wouldn't rule it out for the future! Thanks for asking and especially for reading. I can't thank you enough for that. xoxo

Joy Allegro's Honey Orange Glazed Chicken

Does it make a significant difference to use the raw apple cider vinegar as opposed to regular apple cider vinegar? Can you explain why? Thank you!

Reply for Cleo: The raw vinegar is organic and tastes better (more apple-y), which is why Joy would use it, and we do, too. Substituting for this recipe would change the flavor profile though some palates may not pick up the difference (Joy and Clare would). Enjoy!

Cookbook or... Question Answered

I really want all the recipes but am having a hard time navigating the websites to find them. Do you have a cookbook? Even just an e-pub or pdf I could put on my Christmas Wishlist would be amazing.

Reply for Cleo: The recipes Cleo creates are part of the storytelling universe in her culinary mysteries, a way to expand her fictional world into a real-world experience for her readers. That's why she has no plans for a cookbook. Again, the recipes are part of Cleo's storytelling universe, which is why you'll find them in the print and digital editions of her Coffeehouse novels.

The Ghost and the Femme Fatale - Question answered

Hi. I was wondering why The Ghost and the Femme Fatale isn’t available on Kindle when all the other books are? I have arthritis in my hands and it is easier for me to read on the Kindle. I love this series!

Reply for Cleo - We are so happy to know that you are enjoying the Haunted Bookshop Mystery series, thank you so much for posting. The Ghost and the Femme Fatale is available in e-book form (Nook, Kobo, etc.) The problem with the Kindle is temporary and should be resolved soon (just a technical glitch on Amazon's part, they're working on it)!

Apple Pie Scones - Question answered

The recipe does not specify how much sugar to use in the dough. Can you specify? Thanks!

Reply for Cleo -- YES, the recipe DOES indeed specifiy the amount in both the hardcover and digital editions. It is 1/3 cup. << And Step 2 of the recipe tells you how to add it. Enjoy!

Where to find actual recipes

Hi Cleo, I am a huge fan who listens to your books rather than reading them. I look at your site regularly and see the beautiful color pictures of all of the finished recipe items but I can't find the actual recipes with measurements, cooking time, etc. They don't come with the audio books. Is there a way to get them that I am just missing? I especially want the brownie recipe that Clare took to the Bomb Squad in Billionaire's Blend. Help please! Thank you. Eleanor

Replying for Cleo - Thank you, Eleanor, for your nice words about Cleo's books! The audio books are read by an accomplished actress. We are so proud of her. This past year, she was part of the cast of CODA, the Academy Award winning best picture of the year!

As to your question about recipes, the audio books are produced performances of the book by our talented actress Becky Gibel. The audio license is granted only for the reading of material aloud to you, the reader. That's a legal rights issue. And because it makes no sense to read twenty recipes aloud in an audio book, the recipes are not included. What you pay for is the PERFORMANCE of the book, which costs extra time and money, just as adapting it for TV or film would. In a TV show or movie, you would not see the recipes, either! And that's why you will only find the recipes in Cleo's printed hardcover, paperback, and e-books. This may disappoint you, but please know that Cleo shares many free, bonus recipes with her fans, and you are welcome to sign up for Cleo's newsletter, in which she always shares recipes.

Just send a "Sign me up" email to >> <<
and watch for the reply. In the reply, you will find links to a few of Cleo's past newsletters, which include many free recipes, compliments of Cleo.

I'm so curious, please help

Question, I took a long break after reading 6 or so books, believe I've picked up the series again with the next. Wasn't there a romantic relationship between Clare and Mike Quinn. No mention of anything like that in A Brew to a Kill.

Reply for Cleo -- SURE THERE IS! Turn to Chapter 35 and you'll see Quinn risk his entire career to save Clare and Matt from a DEA arrest, and then Quinn moves in with her to keep her safe. This reply (along with your question) will disappear very soon to prevent other readers from reading the spoiler, so we hope you see it.

Have fun! Clare and Quinn have great adventures in the books you've missed. Don't miss Coffeehouse Mysteries - MURDER BY MOCHA and DEAD COLD BREW and BREWED AWAKENING and HONEY ROASTED if you're a big Quinn fan!

Croque Monsieur

Do you have a recipe for that croque monsieur mentioned in Murder by Mocha?

Cleo's reply: YES! Here you go: Put 2 slices of bread on a lined baking sheet. Make a béchamel sauce and spread it generously on each slice of bread. Add a slice of good quality ham and a mound of shredded Gruyere cheese. Close the sandwich with another slice of bread and top that bread with more sauce and another mound of shredded Gruyere cheese. Finally, sprinkle the sandwich with herbes de Provence and bake about 10 to 15 minutes in a pre-heated 425° F. oven until the cheese is golden brown and bubbling. It’s delicious! ~ Cleo

Retired Barista

I just happened to find your books by accident. I wish I had read them while I was working as a Barista. These are such fun books...only, while enjoying the reads I crave Clare's espresso or any med to dark roast coffee beans. Thank you for so much information from roasting to brewing and complementary food pairing. Delizioso!

Hello! I heard that the next book will be coming out in 2023. How do you plan to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of your Coffeehouse Series?
February 17, 2022

Absolutely Addictive

Hi Cleo, I have read (actually listen to) a lot of cozy mysteries but without a doubt you have a wonderful series and one of the very best available. The Coffeehouse series has a great balance of mystery, wonderful characters and romance. They are intricate and I simply can't put them down. I'm on #13 (doing in order) and each one just gets better. I do hope at some point we actually have a wedding for Clare and Mike. My question for you is: how in the world do you have the knowledge base for the coffee information you use in the books as well as the ethnic food items. It is wonderful but so detailed and interesting. Add to that the recipes and you can see how I have become addicted. Please keep this series going. I also want to thank you for the respect and importance you show to the FDNY and PDNY. Keep up the wonderful writing. Best wishes from Columbus OH.

Recipe question

I've read and thoroughly enjoyed all of the coffeehouse books, and I like to try some of the recipes. Unfortunately, the recipe in "Honey Roasted" (Kindle version) for Chocolate Swirl Blondies is unclear. The ingredients list for the swirl calls for 1 t brewed coffee and 1 t butter. But the directions call for 1 T brewed coffee and 1/2 T butter. Can you tell me which is correct, and also verify that the blondie batter only needs 1 t brewed coffee? Thank you.

Cleo's reply -- Hello, and thank you for the question! Use the amounts that you see in the ingredient list: 1 teaspoon of brewed coffee for the batter. And for the swirl, 1 teaspoon of coffee and 1 teaspoon of butter.

FYI -- The directions should not have those slightly different amounts listed; however, there is no harm done. The difference is nearly negligible. In other words, if a reader uses a splash more coffee and a bit more butter in the chocolate swirl, it won't change the recipe in any significant way. For clarity, in future editions of the book, the amounts in the directions will be deleted. But the recipe is a good one (either way), and we enjoy it. We hope you do too!
