Question about series

Hello Cleo I have a question when writing a series...

Cleo's reply: Odd pub business question to put on this board anonymously. Not sure if you are an author, a reader, or an aspiring author. Would you like to email me? CoffeehouseMystery@gmail.com Can't promise I'll be able to properly answer, but I'll try. Thanks for dropping by. :) ~ Cleo

Would you tell Jack

Would you please tell Jack next time you talk to him that my stomach was in my heart because I was worried about the big lug!!! He's such a hottie and Pen is such a sweetie it would be a shame to see them seperated. BTW, you've probably said before but when is your next Jack and Pen book coming out???? I've read all of both of your series so I'm in dire need for a Jack or a Coffeehouse fix. Thanks again for the time and talent you put in each of your books I recommend them to my friends all the time :)

Sue in Iowa

Cleo's reply:

I will let the ghost know! :)

As for your question: The next book is coming out next year. I'll have more info on the new book later this year.

Thank you so much for your kind words about the Haunted Bookshop Mysteries. Pen and Jack appreciate knowing that you'd like to pay yet another visit to their little New England bookstore.

~ Cleo/Alice

For those who don't know what Sue and I are taking about...

The Ghost and Mrs. McClure

Book #1 of
The Haunted Bookshop

(5 in print thus far. I write these
under the name Alice Kimberly.)

This mystery series features a prim New England widow (Pen), a lifelong fan of noir fiction, who one day realizes that her quaint Rhode Island bookshop is haunted by the ghost of a hardboiled private investigator.

Jack Shepard was gunned down in Pen's shop over sixty years before; and, because murder was his business in life, Pen discovers he's a handy partner when she finds herself facing true crime!

July 6, 2011

I read about 20 books a week and got The Ghost and the Haunted Mansion in a book of books once i read it had to go to local book store and get the rest they are really great books I can't wait for another one to come out.

Cleo's reply:

Thank you! There are five books in print in my Haunted Bookshop series, published under my other pen name (Alice Kimberly). The Ghost and the Haunted Mansion is book #5. If you liked it, I hope you'll read the others, too. :)

For anyone wondering what we're talking about, here is a description of this book from the Haunted Bookshop page of my web site.

Bookshop owner Penelope never believed in ghosts, until she met the spirit of Jack Shepard. Then Pen’s mailman, Seymour Tarnish, gets into deep trouble, and Pen not only believes in her ghost, she asks him for help...

An elderly lady has been found dead on posh Larchmont Avenue, her will recently (and suspiciously) revised to name Seymour as heir to her mansion. Many eyes turn to the hapless mailman as the murderer, but Seymour doesn't care. He's too busy settling into his new digs.

Unfortunately, Seymour's new mansion appears to be haunted and when the ghosts begin plaguing him, he tries to hire a team of parapsychologists to exorcise every last spirit from the town of Quindicott. Now Pen must not only solve a murder, she must act fast to save her beloved ghost, because if these spirit zappers actually do their job, then the ghost of Jack Shepard finally will be history. And that scares Pen a lot more than rattling chains and cold spots.

Jack and Pen

I'm reading The Ghost and the Haunted Mansion (pg 258 of 281) and my stomach is in knots and my heart in my throat worried about whether or not Jack is going to be able to make it back to Pen. I just Love Love Love these books. Keep them coming

Sue in Iowa

Cleo's reply: HELLOOOO, IOWA!!!!!

Thank you, Sue. I LIVE to put readers' stomachs in knots. :) You made my day. Wait...Jack is going all chilly on me. "What is it, Jack?" He wants me to type something...just a second...

I'm all for gettin' your panties in a twist, baby. But this stomach in knots stuff is for the birds. If you broads are gonna yammer about me like I'm some kind of ipecac syrup, I'm really gonna take a powder...

Hmmm... for a tough (dead) guy, Jack is sounding awfully sensitive. :)

Thanks again, Sue. (And if you feel a chill on a warm day, don't be alarmed. I'm sure it's just Jack stopping by to say hey.)

Keep in touch!

I've always had an addiction to coffee and when I saw your first book I was like why not, and fell in love with the series, I like to just curl up in a chair and read!

Cleo's reply:

I'm so glad to hear that. Coffee and reading go together almost as well as caffeine and murder. :) All kidding aside, thank you for dropping by to let me know. It means a lot to me!

 Warmest java wishes,
~ Cleo

From another Librarian Fan

I've recommended your series to so many people here at the Jackson district Library. I hope you're going to St. Louis for Bouchercon 2011!

Jane DeBano

Cleo's reply:

Oh, Jane, thank you!!! Clearly, you are a librarian goddess. :)

Hey, I'll let you in on a little secret. A librarian plays a key role in solving the crime in my upcoming Coffeehouse Mystery: MURDER BY MOCHA. You'll meet her near the end of the novel. I hope you enjoy my new one, too.

Thank you for dropping by my *virtual* coffeehouse, and thank you again for reading (and recommending) my books. It is the best gift that you can give to any author, and I sincerely appreciate it.

Love the whole series!!

Your books are so wonderful!! You have such a talent of bringing the characters to life. I recently discovered your Coffee House Mysteries and I have all of them. Look forward to each and everyone in the future! At home we are now grinding our own coffee and making espressos etc!! We are hooked on a great cup of jo!! I know normally men don't read these types of books (cozy) but my husband even loves them too! Thanks again for hours of enjoyment reading your books!!

Cleo's reply:

What an incredibly kind message. Thank you! I posted the photo (above) because of your comment: "...normally men don't read these types of books (cozy) but my husband even loves them too!"

I'd like you (and your hub) to know that he is not alone! I have received countless emails from men who enjoy the Coffeehouse Mysteries. In some cases, their wives put them up to reading the books (and they got hooked), and in some cases they found the books on their own in the Mysteries and Thriller sections of stores (and online).

Of course, as most of my readers know, I write these books in collaboration with my husband, Marc Cerasini, who has a fantastic resume. Marc wrote original action-fantasy novels for Marvel Comics based on their marquee character Wolverine. He put federal agent Jack Bauer back in action in his original 24 novels (with the approval of Fox's 24 story editors). He's even ghostwritten for Mr. Tom Clancy. Marc is a wonderful cook, too (just like Matteo Allegro).

Below is a pic of my hub and writing partner, Marc Cerasini, doing dishes in our tiny Queens, New York, kitchen. See! Even tough guys do dishes!

So thanks again for posting the message. I hope you'll come back again, and I really hope you'll enjoy my new Coffeehouse Mystery: MURDER BY MOCHA.

Warmest java wishes
to you and your husband,

~ Cleo

treats are sinfully delicious, and the recipe can

treats in

Great find!

I found a few of your books at the library and discovered a whole new take on mysteries. I love the fact that I can read a great book and have some recipes to try out at the end. Thanks so much! I can't wait until your next book is out.

Cleo's reply: Thank you so much! Like you, many readers have told me that they first discovered my books at the library; and, as we all know, librarians are the hippest people on the planet (keepers of that literary flame). :)

No kidding: I owe a big thank you to those librarians who have stocked my titles in their stacks.

Blueberry Cream cake

After seeing the picture of Clare's Blueberry Cream Cake (from Roast Mortem) on this site I decided to try it for a dinner I went to on Saturday since fresh blueberries are in season and it was a big hit. Super easy to make and tasted great, people were asking me for the recipe. I used a pre-made graham cracker crust and total prep time was under 5 min. I will be making this again

Cleo's reply:

Oh, that's sweet news! That dessert is one of my favorites and perfect for summer when blueberries are affordable. You can also make it with frozen berries at other times of the year.

You know, I wasn't sure what to name that dessert since it's a cross between a cake and a pie. I finally went with "cake" and "pie" in the formal name, which I hope wasn't too confusing. It's amazing how good this is *and* how quickly it is to make. I appreciate your dropping by to let me know you enjoyed it. Come on back now, y'hear? :)

Clare and Matt

Please bring them back together! I do not like Mike Quinn. Especially when he calls Clare sweetheart. I want Matt and Clare back together please!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cleo's reply:

Thank you for your comment. Well, you know...I can't tell you here and now what's going to happen between Clare and Matt (or Clare and Quinn). You'll have to find out by reading the future books. :)

Again, I thank you sincerely for your comment. I always enjoy hearing from readers. (One quick request: the next time you comment, please leave a nickname or initials, something so I and others on this board have a way of knowing who you are. Thanks again!)

Clare's Old Fashioned Donut Cupcakes/Muffins

Hi Cleo, I've written here before and it's been a while since I've been back (to leave a message) but I wanted to break the "silence" by telling you that I've made the Old Fashioned Doughnut Muffins (from Roast Mortem) about four times and they are a big hit! I add my own little tweaks but mostly stick to the recipe. They are delicious. I've eaten four in a row (I made them small for that batch for that reason!) for breakfast. Probably not the healthiest breakfast but very delicious.

Cleo's reply:

Thank you for letting me know (and dropping back, too).

For those of you wondering what we're talking about: Clare Cosi's Doughnut Muffins were a featured recipe in my 9th Coffeehouse Mystery, Roast Mortem, soon to be released in paperback. The book made a reviewer's Favorite Pick of the Year list at Bookreporter.com. It's also close to my heart because it's not just a murder mystery, it's a tribute to New York City's "Bravest," our firefighters. For learn more about Roast Mortem, click here. To see some of the featured recipes in Roast Mortem, click here

What is it? A featured recipe in Roast Mortem.

Audio books

Are any of your books available as audio books? My husband & I enjoy them on the road & when camping. Thanks.

Cleo's reply:

Audio books are being recorded as I type this! This is big news, and I haven't announced it on the site yet, but just between us...

GoAudio (BBC Audio) bid on and won the right to record the entire Coffeehouse Mystery back list.

On What Grounds (Book #1 of the series) will be out this month in audio, followed by Book #10, Murder by Mocha, in August, when Mocha will be released for the first time in hardcover.

After that, the entire Coffeehouse Mystery back list of books will be released by GoAudio (BBC Audio) over the next two years. I'll have more info on the release schedule soon, and thank you for asking. :)

Cleo's Reply - Hi back! And thank you for your question. Murder Most Frothy, along with all of the other Coffeehouse and Haunted Bookshop mysteries, are available in all standard e-book formats, including Kindle and Nook. If you don't see it in Kobo, check again in another few weeks. In my experience, new e-book publishers tend to do things in stages. If every other Coffeehouse Mysteries is available to you in Kobo, Murder Most Frothy most likely will be, too, given a little more time.

You can always contact Kobo customer service directly with your question or request. Thanks again for your question and thanks especially for reading my books. :)

All best,

Response to: Just an idea for Pen

i think that's a great idea. it would be easier to carry it around without Pen worrying about forgetting her purse somewhere (like she did at Prospero House in Dead Man's Library) or, even worse, losing Jack's nickel.-Rosa

Clare and Matt

No way should they get back together. Matt was a pratt who deserved to lose her but he now has another chance with his 'Trend setter' and it would be cruel to ditch Mike.

To Truly

I think you will love her other series as much but in a different way. I've read all the coffeehouse mysteries and all but one of the Mrs. McClure series. Even my daughter who is now 12 likes Mrs McClure. I got her a kindle for her birthday and the first book she wanted on it was The Ghost and Mrs. McClure...she has a crush on Jack ;)

I have just recently found your wonderful books and am on #4 of the Coffeehouse Mysteries. Imagine my delight when I Googled you and found that you have another series! I'm thrilled. Great books and keep 'em coming please!
